Basic Data

Title of the study programme: Graduate University Study of Nursing – Promotion and Protection of Mental Health

Study programme implementor: The Faculty of Health Studies University of Rijeka

Duration of the study programme: 2 years

Organization of the study and teaching:
Considering that the mental health problems, according to the WHO's predictions, will be the leading pathology in the morbidity of the population in the upcoming 20-year period, it is necessary to begin with the education of the required nursing personnel involved in the management of the protective houses, patronage teams and the so-called 'case management'.On the other hand, knowledge of the causes and ways of treating mental disorders increasingly confirm the necessity of a biopsychosocial approach to the treatment of mental disorders. Masters of nursing are the professionals needed in order to implement the reform of the mental health system. In accordance with the principles of the Bologna Declaration, the proposed study programme is structured and evaluated with 120 ECTS credits and lasts two years. During the first year, four modules are implemented: general-compulsory courses, scientific research methods, psychological-pedagogical module, and a module that comprises 9 elective courses, among which the student has to choose three. In the second year of study, five compulsory courses are offered that are connected to mental health, and 31 elective courses, among which the student has to choose six. Graduate study of nursing contributes to a significantly better education of the bachelors of nursing, and helps them in mastering the novelties of the profession, teaching them to think critically by accepting new, both technical and scientific achievements of this rapidly evolving profession. We are faced with the increasing demands of modern lifestyles and work, resulting in imbalance between health and disease. Thus, the application of appropriate methods is an indispensable way of successful treatment, improving of health as a whole, shortening the time of sick leave and prolonging the work potential, while improving the quality of life.
At the end of the study, the student writes master's thesis based on the research.
